Jimmy
Carter's 'New Chance for Peace'
Washington
Post - Tuesday, January 23, 2007; A16
Can
anyone convince former president Jimmy Carter that Israel, unfortunately, does
not have "internationally recognized borders"? It is common knowledge
to those dealing seriously with the Middle East that Israel's pre-1967
"borders" were armistice lines agreed to by the warring parties in
1949. They were never meant to be the "secure and recognized
boundaries" that U.N. Security Council Resolution 242 called for after the
Six-Day War in 1967.
This
being the case, what merit should we attribute to Mr. Carter's current
"peace" proposals when the former president continues to display
either his ignorance of the basics or his barely disguised malice toward Israel
-- or both?
