I am afraid Barbara
Opall-Rome’s story in the May 31 issue, “Gaza Mission Breeds Israeli
Discontent,” was more biased political commentary than astute defense
analysis.
Having just returned from Israel leading a Jewish Institute for National
Security Affairs (JINSA) delegation of distinguished former U.S. military
(including an astronaut and a general who commanded the U.S. Marines in Iraq),
we encountered a different picture of Israel’s resolve with regard to its
anti-terrorist activities in Gaza, and were impressed by the Israel Defense
Forces’ extraordinary efforts to avoid civilian casualties.
Morale in all units visited was high, as was public support for the Gaza
military operations. This is not the picture painted in the article.
